Nici urâțenia prea mare, nici sărăcia prea umilitoare, boală prea respingătoare, nu sunt îndestulătoare pentru a ne feri – prin ele însele – de mândrie! Trezvia și discernământul duhovnicesc sunt cele care-l fac pe om să-și vada boala, frica de Judecată, înțelegerea faptului că toate sunt: ”Deşertăciunea deşertăciunilor, zice Ecclesiastul, deşertăciunea deşertăciunilor, toate sunt deşertăciuni!”. Cum se manifestă această boală sufletească? Prin anumite atitudini: prea marea încredere în sine, mulțumirea de sine, semeția, îndrăzneala necuviincioasă, credința că le știi pe toate, încrederea doar în propria judecată, convingerea că ai întotdeauna dreptate, îndreptățirea de sine, împotrivirea în cuvânt, voința de a-i învăța pe alții, de a porunci, nesupunerea, socotirea că ești mai presus de ceilalți oameni, disprețul față de semeni, etc. Leacul?
